I should have known they'd be here soon - the Sharp Shinned Hawk has been here for several weeks and the Grackles arrived the 1st of October right on schedule but I guess since we just started wearing socks the last 2 days - I wasn't really thinking it was Dark Eyed Junco weather.
The journey of the Dark Eyed Junco is not as impressive as that of the Humingbird or the Whooping Cranes or other Neo-Tropical Migrants BUT they are definately a very cool winter bird. Watch for them scratching in the snow. THEY LOVE SNOW! Like Robin's in the Rain.

I'm sure that EVERYONE reading this post will be shaking in their seats with anticipation of seeing their FOS (first of season) Dark Eyed Junco - or even better a pink sided or Oregon Race Dark Eyed Junco! But I for one, am off to the Country Store as I am rather ashamed of the welcome feast that I have to offer the weary travelers - bread crumbs - pathetic!
you just saw it this morning. Cool. I was actually just thinking about them a few days ago. Yesterday I was on the deck with the kids and saw a shadow of a big bird, I looked up as a red tailed hawk flew right over us and into the trees and the little birds all scattered out.
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful picture! I look at birds a little longer now and often wish I had my camera glued to my hip so I can take a pict and ask you and Lisa what kind of bird. We don't get many different birds here.
ReplyDeleteAlthough oddly enough a few weeks ago I saw Canadian Geese already!! I thought it was rather early?
