The whole Santa thing has turned out to be a very interesting experiment. I have always been up in the air about how to handle discussing Santa, to the point that I pretty much never said much of anything. We've always taught about Jesus and read the Christmas Story from Luke 2. I've always put out the nativity set, and was thrilled to find the Little People plastic nativity set one year. Jesus is a part of us all year, and is extra special at Christmas.
I never really had to say anything about Santa, because it's so out there, that they learned it all with out me even opening my mouth. Before long we were writing letters to Santa and setting out plates of cookies on Christmas eve. A few years ago when I tucked Izzy into bed, she began a long story about these 2 red lights she could see out her window. She told me how there used to only be one light, and she knew that it was Jesus watching her. But, now there were 2 lights and that meant one was Jesus and one was Santa.
When the topic of Santa being real comes up I will ask "well, what do you think?" By their expressions, and the way they pause I am positive that both girls know for sure that Santa is not real. I do think that they are not ready to admit it out loud, and that's ok.
