Even if the warm weather is only a glimpse of what is to come, eventually - days, weeks, months from now when we are all pasty white and depressed, bearing chapped lips and noses, and leaning slightly to the right while walking after a winter of running on the banked indoor track at the gym - alas, it was here for a day and behold the signs of spring are springing up all around us.
Last 2 weeks - Mockingbirds, Cardinals, Sparrows and Finches began singing
Last week - Mourning Doves Singing
Mar 1st - Return of the Eurasian Tree Sparrow and the Robins!!!
Mar 2nd - Song Sparrows began singing and spotted some Crocuses begining to sprout
Mar 3rd - A flock of 200 Grackles and a handful of Red Winged Blackbirds descended on our
yard/ deck to recieve the bounty I had left for for the select few who usually frequent my feeders.
Many FOY birds are popping up all over the state (FOY = First of Year).
Watch as the goldfinches change from their dull olive gray colors to their traditional bright yellow and black. Watch for the Cardinals to come into their full breeding plumage as well. Mating pairs will be caught feeding each other. Males will be singing for their mates from every branch and tree. Nest building will be at its peak and by the end of March the Dark Eyed Juncos will sadly be preparing for their return trip home to the North. It should be a while still until we see Orioles, Hummingbirds etc.
