This year we decided to take a twist in the traditional path to getting old Tom to the table. In years past we have smoked, brined, and baked the poor feller and so it seemed a change was due. Our approach to fine family dining this year was to set fire to the poor birds. We considered one bird at a time, but in the spirit of efficiency we went whole hog, or whole bird as the case may be, and lit ‘em up together. Now mind you, the real chef in the family – which is ABSOLUTELY NOT ME – will argue technicalities such as a string on a burner and piddly squat such as would make it seem an accident – but as the head baking soda thrower I HAVE FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE and I know the truth.
Ultimately the only thing that matters is that we had one bird that was Magnifique! A relatively low stress day of cooking, fun football, only one twisted ankle, good times with dear Maggie & Eric and happy children who fell asleep quickly.
NOW, on to the status quo.
We are going on 10 days of having Matt at home – and I feel like I have hardly seen him and better yet have had very little one on one time with the kids. I need a vacation from my vacation! Who invented this whole holiday thing anyway? I think I am going for the whole holidays are for immediate family only -approach – let’s get together and play some other time. Ok so I know no one is going to buy it but hey a girl can dream.
The halls are decked and the November air is following suit with a light drizzle, an overcast sky and the hint that change is near.
Holidays, changing of the seasons, lights, music – add the children and it all becomes magical. Let us all feel the magic of change, the innocence of being pure like a child, the happiness in rejoicing in life’s simplest pleasures.
