Instantly I was disappointed.
The initial mystery and excitement that drew you into the book was contrived or non-existent in the movie – and yet the characters in the movie acted as if all of the elements had actually been in place.
How could Bella have been wracking her brain to understand what Edward “IS” when it has been mere seconds since she first looked across the lunch room at him.
My casting favorites were Rosalie: who accurately portrayed my vision of the gorgeous, witchy, over protective vampire and Jessica and Mike Newton: who each filled their role of air head, narrow focused teenagers perfectly. The rest of the cast held up better than I expected but there was absolutely NO swooning from these lips. While I may have looked a little closer and longer when Robert Pattinson played Ceddric Diggory the teenage element weighed just a little too heavily here for my taste. Victoria, James and Laurent: were awesome, dead on, sexy, sinister and down right creepy! Bella’s truck: perfect!
Wished we’d had even a peek at that Aston Martin but maybe that will come later.
The fight scene towards the end however got a thumbs up from me. I truly disliked this part of the book, it was so stressful and intense. In the movie the scene was well choreographed and showed the story from the perspective of many characters which is a change from the book-but a good change.
All in all, it was fun to get a look at the town of Forks, to get a feeling for the folliage of Washington, and to feel the heart pumping music that kept it all together.
My ultimate disappointment was Jacob, he never had a chance in the film to be the kind, gentle, best friend that he was in the book and he looked really goofy – we know with whom Stephenie Meyers heart lies!
So, my recommendation is
1. If you haven’t read the book – don’t see the movie – unless you are under 18.
2. If you have read the book – see it – expecting little and you’ll at least be entertained!
I totally agree with your review...mine was similar. The movie was worth seeing, but I think I'll wait until DVD for New Moon. ;)
